The “CREATIVITY TIME” project was realized with funding from the Postcode Lottery and implemented between March and December 2025. It was aimed at women with refugee and migration backgrounds who have been affected by gender-based violence, complementing existing counseling work with a diverse range of creative activities.
The goal of the project was to open up safe spaces for creative expression for the participating women. Through artistic and musical offerings, they were given the opportunity to better process trauma, reduce stress, leave the burdens of everyday life behind for a while, and overcome social isolation. Creativity was consciously used as a resource to promote self-efficacy, stabilization, and community.
In the context of painting workshops, salsa sessions, and handpan and guitar workshops, the women were able to get to know and try out different forms of expression. Some participants also received instruments to take home so they could continue practicing outside the workshops and sustainably integrate their newly learned creative skills into their daily lives.
Thanks to the funding from the Postcode Lottery, LESSAN was also able to set up a music and sound room in its own premises in Hamburg. This room remains available beyond the project for creative, empowering, and community-based activities and forms an important foundation for future creative work with the women.
